Marriott
Public Statements Risk
Marriott is making a strong effort to expand its business in China at a moment when China-US political tensions are rising, creating significant risk. However, the current CEO, Anthony Capuano, is a low profile executive. He does have some social media presence on LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook, but he does not appear to post often or be particuraly active. The company stays neutral on social media, not posting with any identifiable affiliation to a particular party. The company's website mentions sustainability and DEI in the About section.

Political Contributions Risk
Contributes to both parties equally with a very slight Republican skew and a majority of donations coming from the company. Combined contribution level is very high and ranks among the highest in the Consumer Discretionary sector. Contributions to controversial political figures include Mitt Romney and Amy Klobuchar. The firm's risk is elevated by magnitude but mitigated by bipartisanship.

Political Dichotomy Risk
Marriott has a wide, politically diverse consumer base. The company also is known for customer loyalty. While Marriot and its senior executives contribute equally to both parties, one large contribution to a hot-button candidate could trigger a boycott and alienate a large chunk of the company's customer base. Research, however, did not reveal Marriott making politically hazardous public statements or entering into risky marketing campaigns.

Associational Risk
The company has publicly announced an intent to avoid political controversy, and based on our research, it has done so. Research also did not reveal any risky associations on social media. Contributions to Mitt Romney pose some risk because Romney has faced criticism for voting to impeach President Trump.

Brand Visibility Risk
Marriot is a large travel and hotel company. The company has a wide variety of subsidiary brands, most of which feature the Marriot name.
