General Motors
Public Statements Risk
Mary Barra is the current CEO of General Motors. In 2018, she closed five plants and was criticized by Donald Trump. She joined Trump's business forum in 2016, but left in 2017 after Trump's response to the Charlottesville protests. GM's site lists "Social Impact" under the "Commitments" header, which links to a page detailing GM's commitment to environmental sustainability, DEI, social progress, and inclusivity.

Political Contributions Risk
General Motors contributes with a very slight Republican skew although contributions are just about even. Goods data reports the company PAC has historically been responsible for almost all contributions. GM contributes more than its S&P500 rivals Ford and Tesla, including to controversial political figures like Bernie Sanders, Donald Trump, and Hillary Clinton. Size and recipients raise the company's risk but bipartisanship lowers it slightly.

Political Dichotomy Risk
General Motors' customer base is politically diverse due to its scale and variety of products. GM has halted all advertisements on X; however, this was one of the only political actions the brand has made in recent years. The company donates with a slight Republican skew. General Motors lists the danger of changing consumer preferences towards electric vehicles and carbon emission policies as significant risk factors for the company. This acknowledgement can confirm that if GM does not take necessary precaution to handle ESG regulations and keep up with the electric and hybrid vehicle options in the near future, then the company's current consumers could switch to competitors that offer more viable options. In the same vein, since the electrification of automobiles is largely spurred by climate change, which remains a wedge issue, GM's strategy is likely to cause political furor one way or the other. This holds for the auto industry as a whole.

Associational Risk
The company has contributed to groups that support Governor DeSantis, which has generated criticism. The company has also contributed to Republican politicians who support Secure MI Vote, a group that has been criticized for decreasing voting access for Black voters in Michigan. However, the company's contributions are mostly bipartisan.

Brand Visibility Risk
An extremely large and historically relevant company. Its history is taught right alongside American history in schools. As such, and because it sells big-ticket consumer goods, it is something of a lifestyle brand. It has unbelievable brand awareness, and clearly represents a set of values in many consumers' minds. It is somewhat insulated by its large B2B line of business.
