Hormel
Public Statements Risk
Hormel brands are high profile; however, the parent company's name is less so. The CEO, Jim Snee, is not active on social media, having only a LinkedIn page. Snee stays out of the news and does not make many public statements, avoiding all commentary surrounding politics. Hormel Foods was named one of America's Greatest Workplaces for Diversity. On the company website, they disclaim that Hormel is involved in continuing conversations with elected officials and the community to support their mission. The company does actively work toward sustainability; they also post for Pride Month on their social media.

Political Contributions Risk
Hormel contributes overwhelmingly to Democrats, almost entirely through senior executives. Combined contribution level is high and ranks among largest contributors when benchmarked to the Consumer Staples sector, where it is not uncommon to have strong partisanship. Hormel contributes to controversial political figures Amy Klobuchar, Kamala Harris, and Ted Cruz. Their risk is elevated by partisanship and contribution size.

Political Dichotomy Risk
Hormel has a politically diverse customer base, yet contributions are primarily to Democrats. With the widely-consumed nature of the company's products, the company is somewhat inculated from boycotts. In its 10K, Hormel states that one of the larger risks stems from geopolitical issues such as any ongoing wars that may impact grocery and food related supply operations.

Associational Risk
Jeff Ettinger, former Hormel CEO, was a Democratic candidate for a House seat in southern Minnesota. Currently he is the interim president at the University of Minnesota. He is a somewhat known figure involved in politics, but the association is not very alarming. James Hormel, grandson of the company's founder, was the first openly gay Ambassador of the United States, and an advocate for LGBTQ rights. However, he died in 2021. Otherwise, associations with risky figures are nonexistent.

Brand Visibility Risk
Hormel sells a wide variety of grocery products, a segment where consumer demand is driven by price and utility. They are well insulated by their house of brands strategy, and by the fact that their products are quite mundane. On the other hand, this makes substitution much simpler and the Hormel name is very well-known.
